Graduates - Take the Lead

Applications for the 2017 Graduate Programme intake have now closed.

It takes courage to challenge the ordinary. We’re looking for a group of exceptional Graduates who’ve got the confidence, ambition and ability to become future leaders of the Volkswagen Group UK.

This structured two-year programme will give you the experience, training and knowledge you need to begin that journey. In doing so, you’ll be following in the footsteps of some of our current business leaders. If you’re driven, we can show you how to take your ideas and turn them into action.

About the Programme

Become an industry expert

Become an industry expert

The more you experience, the more you learn. That’s what this programme is all about. We’ve designed it to include a wide range of roles and projects, which will provide you with broad commercial knowledge and experience. This won’t just be invaluable to you as you progress in your career – it will also help you to pick a path that suits you.

Face real challenges

Face real challenges

From digital marketing to planning and analysis, the placements you’ll work on are as rigorous as they are varied. You’ll be given projects with business-critical impact from the outset, and we’ll encourage you to suggest your own initiatives – like some on our programmes, you might even find yourself presenting them to our board of directors. You’ll also have the chance to shadow colleagues in other business areas and compete for one of our twelve-month international placements in Europe.

Go beyond expectations

Go beyond expectations

When you complete the programme, you’ll have worked with five brands, built unparalleled industry knowledge and gained experience in roles you may never previously have considered. You’ll know how a fast-paced, commercial business works – but you’ll also know how to influence it. Whatever you want to do next, you’ll be guaranteed a permanent role (usually in a Management position) when you finish, with the option to continue as a generalist or specialise in an area of your choice.

Your Development

Your development

This programme combines on-the-job learning with structured formal training and regular collaboration with senior leadership. When you join, you’ll be assigned a mentor, who’ll be on-hand to offer insight and advice, and you’ll have regular meetings with your manager, whether over a coffee or something a bit more formal. During these meetings, you’ll create a personal and professional development plan, and map your progress against it.

Alongside this dedicated support network, you’ll be encouraged to accelerate your development by shadowing other departments and spending time on-the-road. The more you learn, the more we all benefit: if you want to explore new projects or take on new challenges, the answer will be ‘yes’. In addition to this, we’ll provide you with three structured training courses during your first year (such as personal branding and presentation skills).

This programme will be made up of a series of rotational placements. We’ve mapped these out across the two years, so you can see exactly what your journey looks likes – download a copy of the Programme Overview here.

Driven by intelligence
Information is everything. I work at the heart of Volkswagen Group UK, using logistics to take thousands of cars from our factory to ports to showrooms. To do that, I analyse data, identify risks and opportunities, and find the best strategies for achieving our targets. My performance reports are used by the entire business, from the brand director through to the marketing and sales teams. It shows that, by using commercial intelligence, you can influence the direction of a major UK business.

Graduate, Sales Operations

Driven by development
There’s no hand-holding here. If you join as a Graduate, you have to be ready to jump into the deep end. That’s what I enjoy most about this role – you have to learn, you have to be accountable and you have to take control of your development. I’ve already helped to bring a number of new projects into the business, like our customer experience survey. You do more than just look at the numbers – you make things happen. That’s the best way to make progress: developing a solution and then seeing it in action.

Driven by performance
This job is all about pushing your limits. I’m managing a range of projects that are improving the quality of our customer service, in new and innovative ways. At the same time, I’m learning to take on responsibility and do things more efficiently. We’re a dynamic brand, in a fast-paced industry – that’s pushing me to tackle new challenges, from refining our customer journey to managing our Mystery Shop programme. I’m helping to drive the performance of the business, and the business is driving me.

Driven by adventure
When you’re passionate about your work, you progress. I’ve travelled internationally, met colleagues in different markets and seen the scale of what we do. It’s a huge, multifaceted business, with lots of paths to choose from. I’m driven by the knowledge that I can make that choice for myself – and I know I’ll have to tools and support I need to do it. If you’ve got the desire to learn, you can achieve anything here, even if your objectives change.

Assessment Process

If you pass our initial CV screening stage, you’ll be invited to a telephone interview where you’ll be asked a number of questions to assess your suitability for the Programme. If you’re identified as a stand-out candidate, we’ll invite you to one of our assessment centres in February 2017, where you’ll meet some of our Managers and other Graduates. This process is designed to help us both work out if a career here is right for you. Successful candidates will be offered a place soon after the assessment centre.

Feeling unsure or just want talk to someone with relevant experience? Ahead of making an application, why not get some tips from a current Undergraduate or Graduate using our Digital Mentor Programme?

What are the key stages of the recruitment process?

First, you’ll need to send in your CV and cover letter and answer some of our online screening questions. If you’re successful at this stage, you’ll be invited to take part in a telephone interview. Shortlisted candidates will then be invited to an assessment centre at our head office in Milton Keynes and you’ll be asked to complete some online tests prior to attending.

This process usually takes 8 weeks and we’ll keep you updated throughout this time.

Do I need to be a recent Graduate?

No. Anyone with the necessary grades can apply. You’ll need to bring proof of your qualifications.

What are the minimum requirements to apply?

You’ll need to be working towards at least a 2.1 degree (of any discipline). As well as your qualifications, we look for relevant work experience, ambition and a determination to succeed. You’ll also need to have the right to work in the UK.

What kind of person are you looking for?

We’re all driven by different things. What matters is that you’re just that: driven. We’re looking for people with the energy and determination to pursue a successful, long-term career, and who seek out opportunities to learn, develop and take responsibility. If you share that desire, you’re the kind of person we want to work with.

Can I apply if I have a disability?

Yes, of course. We’re an equal opportunities employer and we welcome applications from all candidates. Please let us know if you have any special requirements so that we can take these into consideration during the recruitment process.

Will my travel expenses be reimbursed?

If you’re invited to one of our assessment centres, we’ll put you up in a local hotel, provide you with breakfast and get you to and from our offices. You’ll also be invited to an evening meal the night before the event, where you’ll get to meet the other candidates and some of our employees. Any additional travel expenses will not be reimbursed.

If I get a place on the programme, where will I be based?

All positions are based in the Volkswagen Group UK head office in Milton Keynes. Because some of our Graduates move to Milton Keynes for the programme, an established community of Graduates has evolved here. This is a great social network for anyone who is new to the area.

What’s the package on offer?

You’ll start on a salary of £30,000. Within your second year, you’ll be eligible for our annual pay and bonus review. Any increases are discretionary and based on performance.

How are my placements allocated?

Our placements are designed to give you the best experience possible and the opportunity to experience a variety of roles, business areas and functions. The structure of the programme sets you up for your future career with the Volkswagen Group UK – and we’ll take your preferences into consideration wherever possible. Your first placement will last one year, and the following two placements will each last six months. You could be doing anything from managing product merchandise at ŠKODA to reporting on used car performance at Volkswagen Passenger Cars. In doing so, you’ll pick up broad commercial knowledge and expertise.

What does the two year programme look like?

It’s a combination of placements, project work, personal development and experiences designed to fully immerse you in our business. This is mapped out across the two years so you can see exactly what your journey looks likes – click here for a full programme overview.

What happens when I finish the programme?

You’re guaranteed a permanent role with us when you finish the programme. A few months before you finish, we’ll talk through the different options with you. With two years of broad commercial experience, you’ll now have the opportunity to specialise if there’s a particular business area or function you think you can make a big impact in. There’s also potential for a one-year international placement at the end of the programme.

Will I have the chance to visit the office and meet my manager before I start the programme?

Yes. If you’re successful, we’ll be in regular contact with you over the summer and will hold a welcome event in July 2017.

If I’m a Graduate, but the scheme isn’t for me, are there any other opportunities for me?

Yes. There are a number of other opportunities available with us and you can find out more about working for Volkswagen Group UK and our latest vacancies here: http://vwgcareers.co.uk/

What further development is available for me after the programme?

There are also lots of development opportunities available to support you with your career progression once you have completed the programme, such as a place on one of our talent programmes, and a suite of training courses open to all employees to attend.
